Overview

DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES

Year of Establishment:   Established in 1972, the department of Humanities is the oldest department of the college. The department started with Psychology, English Literature, Sociology, Economics, and Social Work. Political science was introduced in 1989. Philosophy and Public Administration were introduced in 2014.

Course Structure:  At undergraduate level following subjects are offered;

  • English Literature 
  • Economics 
  • Psychology (With Practicals) 
  • Political Science 
  • Sociology 
  • Social work 
  • Philosophy 
  • Public Administration

A student can choose 3 subjects. The Foundation course papers are compulsory in all semesters.    
     

Modern Teaching Methods & ICT  Used by the Faculty

  • computer with internet accessibility is available with the H.O.D. and the staff can use it as and when needed. 
  • The staff can access the computer lab as well as the research centre which is equipped with computers with internet facility and relevant books and journals. This helps the teachers to prepare themselves for their lectures and keep themselves updated with latest changes and information about their subjects. 
  • Regular use of A.V. room, Conference hall for presentation, discussion and workshops. These rooms are fully equipped with LCDs and internet facility that is used by the students and the staff of the department of humanities frequently. 
  • Movies & Documentaries on relevant subjects matter are screened to provide a better understanding of the subject specific topics. The students of humanities are able to relate themselves with these issues in a better manner as they get an audio visual exposure. 
  • The humanities department has a library with a good collection of reference books for the staff as well as students. The library is constantly updated by adding new books and the students are encouraged to make full use of the facility. The psychology lab and departmental library was set up in 1987.
  • Field Visits:. The department of humanities organises field visits, exposure visits and training programmes for the students for which the college bus is used for commuting.   
  • Students have access to electronic gadgets, tests and experiments available with the psychology laboratory.  
      
 Major Activities of the Department of Humanities

  • Training Programmes for counsellors and social workers was organized by the department of psychology in 1992 and 1996 for the social welfare board.
  • A three days workshop on T.C.I. for students of Humanities was conducted by Mr. Hermann Eppler from Switzerland. Through numerous experiential exercises he explained the psychoanalytical underpinnings of theme centred interaction. 
  • As part of the semester system introduced in 2007, the students of B.A. opt. for project work in one of their optional subject in every semester. The projects are related to the subject of their choice and are employment/self-employment oriented. The project is guided by the subject teacher who is constantly in touch with the agency and the student to monitor them and help them to prepare the project.
  • The project is based on their visit to an organizationinstitution where they have to spend 3 days to collect relevant information and data by discussing with the in charge managers, supervisor and the employees of the organization or the institution such as NGOs, Banks, shops of different kind, business organizations, police stations, government offices etc.
  • A three days workshop on Personality Development was organized by the Department in 2014. Me. Daniel Boksa from Germany was the chief resource person and was assisted by Dr. Vinay Mishra
  •  Presentation and viva (both internal and external) is also conducted. For the odd semesters, internal viva is conducted by the guide and the HOD and for even semesters external subject expert is invited for each subject to conducted the viva. 
  •  Separate projects are also taken by the students of psychology and social work which is based on their visit to several organizations such as NGOs, villages, central jail, hospitals, de –addiction centres, family planning association, etc.
  •  CCEs are conducted by each subject teacher as a part of internal assessment. Innovative presentations such as presentation with the help of short films made by the students, enactment of theoretical topics etc are encouraged.
  • Tutorials are held for S.C, S.T. students in order to give them a better understanding of the subject and also help them in improving their communication skills. 
  • Counsellors of I.C.T.C. of Madhya Pradesh State AIDS control society – Batch 1 for 12 days duration. HIV AIDS counselling was provided to 22 counsellors from integrated counselling and testing centres run by the MP State AIDS Control Society. They were given basic training on counselling skills.
  • Counsellors of I.C.T.C. of M.P. State AIDS control society – Batch 2 for 12 days HIV/AIDS counselling was provided to 12 counsellors from integrated counselling and testing centres run by the MP State Aids control society. They were given basic training on counselling skills.
  • UNFPA Association Training of family planning counsellors training program for 6 days was organized from 28 Nov to 3rd Dec' 2011.Couselling skills and training of family planning methods were imparted to counsellors of Madhya Pradesh.
  • International Seminar on Land, Water Resources, Bio- Diversity and Climatic Changes organized by the college in the year 2010.
 

Personal Counselling and Career Counselling by Department of Humanities

  • Guidance and Counselling Cell is taken care of by Dr. Vinay Mishra HOD, Department of Humanities. The cell also offers counselling to the students of other departments .

STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENTS

The Department of Humanities has had the tradition of facilitating students for their academic performance. This has been done through running trophies and shields in the name of people who have contributed to the growth of the department.

  • Archbishop Eugene D’souza memorial shield for Topper in Humanities (BA), 
  • Professor G.M. Das Shield for Topper in Psychology (BA Social Sciences) 
  • Dr. Sr.Faustina Pereira Shield for Topper in B.A.(Humanities) II year:  
The department of Humanities has had the distinction of a 100 % pass rate of students. Most students join other colleges for post graduation studies. However some continue with BSSS to complete post graduation in English Literature, Social Work or MBA Twinning programme.

According to the reports available with teachers of the department, the students of humanities are employed at colleges, schools and universities as teachers. Some have cleared the civil services examination, and some others are employed by corporate houses in India and abroad. Some others have made a name for themselves in the field of business.
